data.ai has shared a report on the mobile gaming market in 2024. In total, games earned $107.3 billion – 2% less than in 2022. Here, data.ai takes into account third-party Android stores in China. Royal Match and Gardenscapes earned more than $1 billion in a year for the first time.
- The U.S. ($9.2 billion), South Korea ($5 billion), and Japan ($4.4 billion) are the largest countries in terms of revenue on Android. On iOS, the U.S. ($14.8 billion), China ($11.2 billion) and Japan ($8.4 billion) lead the way.
- India (9.4 billion), Brazil (4.3 billion) and Indonesia (3.3 billion) are the leaders on Google Play in terms of downloads. On iOS, the US (2.1 billion, China (1.2 billion) and Japan (355 million) lead the way.
- The North America market by revenue in 2023 sagged by about 1%. APAC-region share declined from 51% in 2022 to 49% in 2023. South Korea grew by 21% in revenue in 2023.
- The number of games with more than $10 million in annual revenue in 2023 totaled 924 projects. 150 games surpassed the $100 million milestone. Finally, 7 projects earned more than $1 billion in 2023. 2021 remains the best year in the market in terms of revenue.
- Mobile companies headquartered in China earned $27.3 billion in 2023. That’s a quarter of the entire gaming industry’s volume.
- Japan is the leader in terms of people spending $10.76 per month on iOS games. In terms of Google Play numbers, South Korea leads with $11.38 spent by people on games per month. That said, data.ai notes that monthly spending in almost all regions has returned to pre-pandemic values. In 2024, many people are thinking about optimizing their budgets.
- The number of game downloads fell 2% year-on-year to 88 billion. This is the first drop since 2020. data.ai notes that the number of new games in the top 1000 by downloads from 2020 is decreasing. In the case of some markets (US, South Korea), a slight increase is noticeable in 2023. But for the most part, new projects get fewer downloads.
