Square Enix’s remake of The Portopia Serial Murder Case with a built-in neural network received 90% negative feedback on Steam. The neural network was supposed to allow gamers to have meaningful conversations with the detective’s assistant, the game’s main character. The AI version of The Portopia Serial Murder Case peaked online at 351 gamers.

Judging by the comments on Steam, the neural network does not understand many of the requests and often answers with exact phrases like “I do not know what to say about it” and “hmm”.

This software is a training demonstration of Natural Language Processing (NLP), an artificial intelligence technology applied to the adventure game The Portopia Serial Murder Case (created by Yuji Horii and first published in Japan in 1983).

At the time of the game’s release, most adventure games used a “team input” system, where the player was asked to type to determine his character’s actions. Such free-text input systems allowed players to feel very accessible.

However, they often led to frustration: players knew what action they wanted to perform but could not do it because they could not find the correct wording. The time limitations of PC performance and NLP technology caused this problem.

Using The Portopia Serial Murder Case as a test case, we wanted to show you the capabilities of modern NLP and the impact it can have on adventure games and deepen your understanding of NLP techniques.

The game description on Steam

It looks like the NLP game needs more time to refine and optimize. You can check if the game is that bad by clicking the link. The game is distributed for free.
