Supercell Studios, a Finnish game developer, has released a huge number of interesting games since its launch in 2010. Clash Royale, Clash of Clans or Hay Day – these names are spoken by millions of players around the world, and the games themselves are long remembered, emphasising their popularity and recognition. Ilkka Paananen, CEO of Supercell, wrote in his article about the future he would like to see for his company.

According to the studio leader, the game industry has fundamentally changed over the past decades. Whereas in the past you just had to create a great game that would bring success and revenue to its creators for many years, now two factors contradict this axiom: first, developers are always tasked with creating another game that would break previous records; second, that very first successful game has to be maintained for many months or years.

I believe this two-way problem provides a challenge for game companies over the next decade. And Supercell is certainly among them.

The CEO is confident that these tasks cannot be considered insurmountable. Supercell has certain tactics that they try to stick to in order to create hit games.

This tactic is to create teams of experienced developers within the companies themselves, who will do the development, relying on their own interests and intuition. However, this approach is not flawless either.

We’ve launched 5 hit games, but we’ve killed 30+ by my last count. We haven’t launched a new game worldwide since Brawl Stars on December 12, 2018. I’m not counting, but 4 years, 1 month and 3 days seems too long! Obviously we can improve the situation.

Creating a hit game is a difficult and time-consuming process, because you never know what awaits you, your studio and your game upon release. However, Supercell has been extremely lucky in this regard, having launched a number of successful games.

According to Ilkka Paananen, Supercell should not limit itself to mobile platforms.

Supercell is known today for its mobile games, but perhaps thinking exclusively about them is too limited? We want to make good new games. I’m sure mobile will remain our most important platform for the foreseeable future because of its reach, but maybe we need to draw inspiration wherever and wherever innovation happens.

The company would like to see more ambitious developers on its staff who can contribute to innovation for the studio and its development vision. Among other things, Supercell is trying to open new offices around the world and invest in those studios and games that see true promise.

According to the CEO, the company’s financial strength makes it possible to make plans. And despite falling revenues in 2022 (net profit reached €1.77bn, down 6% from 2021), the company remains one of the biggest game studios in Finland.

As a result, the future for Supercell is about continuing its development, it is about bringing something new, it is about creating games that will be remembered by players forever. And with a lot of determination and confidence, the company will be able to overcome all obstacles and achieve even greater success.
