Nine years after the release of Valiant Heart: The Great War, Valiant Hearts: Coming Home has been released as a sequel, developed by Ubisoft.
However, this news coincidentally coincided with another, less positive one, as the studio plans to close its Polish branch after 15 years in the country. As for Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, this game can be considered a real nugget in the modern game development. The series is simple from a development point of view, because it is primarily a 2D game, a kind of graphic novel about war, it is perceived primarily as a work of literature, not as a game.
However, the atmosphere of the World War I and the complex plot still give full right to consider this game not fun at all, and its perception in spite of the simplicity of the graphics does not suffer from this in any way. It is the most serious project and on the background of all modern games it only looks more impressive.
However, if you compare it with the first part, it is quite “safe”. There is none of the intimate content that the first part of the series had to offer, although it certainly shows wartime horror, broken human destinies, and the overall plot is well-written. It is twisted as a continuation of the first part, when in 1917 the USA is drawn into the World War I, I won’t spoil the rest. It’s just that Valiant Hearts: The Great War itself has become such a benchmark in the genre that even the developers themselves find it difficult to reach again the level they set 9 years ago.
