Richard Garriott and Todd Porter, the Ultima Online creators, are back at it again. This time, the duo will launch a new Web3 MMORPG called Iron and Magic. Details are scarce at the moment. But in essence, the upcoming title will be an open-world sandbox, allowing players to “buy land in the realm of Lord British”.

Lord British is the alias of Richard Garriott, who is an American video game developer and part-time astronaut. He has made a name for himself in the gaming world thanks to the widespread success of Ultima Online. Yet, the industry legend couldn’t replicate the same success with Tabula Rasa and Shroud of the Avatar, the other two MMORPG titles he created.

More about Iron and Magic

Iron & Magic

Currently, there is no info about the game’s lore, setting, gameplay, or graphics engine. According to MMORPG.com, Iron & Magic may feature NFTs in the form of virtual lands. And players can choose a role from diverse races to explore multiple biomes in the open world.

Like many other Web3 games, Iron & Magic also comes with the promise of real ownership of digital assets. Todd Porter commented true ownership of in-game assets as follows:

It might be interesting if we could imagine what it would have been like if you could have owned land and buildings in Ultima, and really own them and have a vested interest in the game.

Without a doubt, coming up with a decent MMORPG is no easy feat. Not to mention incorporating it with blockchain, NFTs, and P2E elements. Given the lack of details though, many are concerned about Iron and Magic being a cash grab as well. On that matter, we’ll leave it to Lord British Richard Garriott to prove it otherwise.

Side note: Saudi Arabia approved the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft.
